What You’ll Learn

Modules 1-4

Modules 1 – 4: In the first four weeks you’ll continue to deepen your mindfulness practice from 101: Mindfulness Foundations and explore what it means to teach mindfully. You’ll learn strategies for your own self-care and wellness, as well as ways to support your students through mindful communication.

  • Module 1: Grounding in Practice. Define what it means to teach mindfully, and why it is a critical precursor to teaching mindfulness. Explore the research on mindfulness for teachers and how practicing mindfulness can support educators in managing stress, connecting to purpose, and avoiding burnout.
  • Module 2: Embodying Mindfulness in the Classroom. Deepen your understanding of “your nervous system is the intervention” by exploring how your nervous system functions as both a tuning fork and a barometer in the classroom. Explore the concepts of attunement, co-regulation, resonance, and empathy and why they are important in embodied, mindful teaching.
  • Module 3: Heartfulness in the Classroom. Define and practice heartfulness, compassion, and equanimity while teaching, and learn how these practices support transforming relationships with students. Explore practices for managing our own reactivity in the classroom.
  • Module 4: Mindful Communication in the Classroom. Explore the components of mindful communication (observations, feelings, needs, and requests). Consider how the ways in which we communicate with students impact a classroom’s sense of safety. Explore how mindfulness supports us in reframing “resistance” as information, and helps us respond to students’ needs.

Modules 5-8

Modules 5 – 8: Explore a variety of engagement and instructional strategies for teaching mindfulness to students, using the Mindful Schools K-12 Curriculum and Domains of Mindful Teaching. Gain access to teaching demonstrations, student workbooks, and resource manuals for teachers and parents.

  • Module 5: Introducing Mindfulness to Students. Learn the approach of the Mindful Schools K-12 Curriculum, and familiarize yourself with the curriculum structure. Define the core components of a mindfulness lesson from The Anatomy of a Mindfulness Lesson. Generate ideas for making mindfulness relevant for your students.
  • Module 6: Inclusive Mindfulness, Welcoming All Bodies. Define culturally sustaining pedagogy and critical pedagogy, and how they inform the Mindful Schools approach to teaching mindfulness. Explore verbal and non-verbal strategies for student engagement. Consider age-appropriate modifications for mindfulness instruction. Explore assumptions and blind spots you may hold about your students.
  • Module 7: Trauma-Sensitive Mindfulness, Welcoming All Experiences. Define what is meant by trauma-sensitive mindfulness instruction, and explain why it is important. Identify specific considerations for teaching mindfulness in a trauma-sensitive way, and consider the adaptations you may need to make for your students. Explore how mindfulness supports social-emotional learning (SEL).
  • Module 8: Sustaining a Mindfulness Culture in the Classroom. Explore ways that mindfulness practices can support your classroom and school community. Determine how you can integrate and sustain mindfulness in your daily school routine (for you and for your students).
