Christy specializes in guiding and mentoring students in the classroom setting, working with small groups of students to dive deeper, and coaching teachers in how to bring mindfulness into their daily classroom routine. She works with students with learning challenges, ADHD, and anxiety. She also works with women who have chronic pain to help them discover the benefits of mindfulness for pain reduction.
Christy initially studied mindfulness to help her manage her chronic pain from pudendal neuralgia, however, she discovered the many benefits of maintaining a personal mindfulness practice and wanted to share the gifts with her middle school students. Her daily practice has enabled her to be authentic and truly present in her classroom teaching and manage pain differently, leading to freedom from pain. Mindfulness brings her back to her own self love and lets her teach in a spot where she can be open and share this gift with others.
Christy Urban is a long-time science and outdoor educator of middle and high school students in the Chesapeake Bay Watershed and abroad. She has been a mindfulness practitioner for three years at the Key School in Annapolis, Maryland. She created a pilot program in the aftercare program which lead to teaching the Mindful School Curriculum with all sixth graders and coordinating a fifth grade program. Excitingly, the program will extend to seventh and eighth graders for the 2017-2018 school year, allowing every middle school child to learn mindfulness! She also runs an on-going program called MindBreak during the school day and is on the Wellness Committee coordinating a mindfulness program that is school wide for all faculty and staff to attend.
