Janet led the Kindergarten through fourth grade student body and faculty at Canterbury School in Mindfulness lessons and meditation practice. She has facilitated daily formal and informal mindfulness practices with her classes as a Kindergarten teacher, incorporating meditation and a wide variety of Mindfulness practices involving the five senses, thoughts, and emotions to allow young students to discover the varied ways that Mindfulness can be practiced in their daily lives. Janet has worked with students one-on-on who suffer from anxiety, at the request of their parents. She led a weekly faculty Mindfulness practice and discussion group. Janet has presented to parent, administrative, and faculty groups to facilitate a clear understanding of Mindfulness and the nature of its benefits and practice in education. She currently teaches Mindfulness classes at a local Cancer Services Center to adult cancer patients in recovery.
Janet has been an educator for nearly 30 years and holds a BA and MS in education. She taught Kindergarten for 23 years and spearheaded the character education program at Canterbury School in 2003. Believing that developing a healthy social/emotional foundation in children is a key component in educating the whole child, she began her Mindfulness training with Mindful Schools in 2014, receiving her MS Certification in 2017. In 2014, Janet introduced the practice of Mindfulness to Canterbury School and it has since grown organically with more teachers receiving Mindful Schools training. Janet is also schooled in Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR), Mindful Self-Compassion (MSC), and Mindfulness Based Cancer Recovery (MBCR). Janet retired from school teaching in 2018 and is working as an independent Mindfulness Instructor teaching Mindfulness for Well-being classes.
