Lisa Ruzzi has been a school counselor for over 24 years. She earned her M.S in Counseling and Human Relations from Villanova University and her B.S. in Psychology from Rosemont College. In 1994, after receiving her Master’s Degree and Elementary Counseling Certificate, Lisa was hired as an elementary school counselor in Lower Merion School District in Bala Cynwyd, Pa.
As the Cynwyd school counselor, Lisa has co-chaired the Human Relations committee, and helped to initiate many school wide projects, helping to accredit the Cynwyd School with their Anti-Defamation League certification every year. She has been involved in the planning and implementation of staff development, school and district wide, in the area of the Second Step Social Skills Program, Mindfulness Practices in the Elementary School setting, and Welcoming Schools Curriculum. She was the co-chair of the 2011-2012 Lower Merion Holistic Cadre focusing on the holistic needs of children, and staff development in the area of Sociocultural Identities.
Lisa co-presented a workshop at the 2011 National Association of School Psychologists Conference on the topic of the Welcoming Schools Curriculum focusing on family diversity, gender stereotyping, and anti-bullying curriculum K-5, and the 2011 Pennsylvania School Counselors Association Convention on the topic of Sociocultural Identities and the impact on teaching and learning in the elementary classroom. She also co-authored an article for the Journal of LGBT Youth entitled Is This the Right Elementary School for My Gender Nonconforming Child?
Most recently she completed the MBSR program at the Jefferson Mindfulness Institute as well as the Year-Long Mindful Schools Program. Lisa has helped to develop a Mindfulness program in her elementary school and co-chairs her district wide Mindfulness task force. She has co-led anxiety groups for children and teaches Mindfulness lessons in K-5 classrooms. After receiving her children’s Yoga certification, Lisa co-teachers a Mindfulness/Yoga program before school for grades 3-5.
Lisa’s passion is to help teachers create a welcoming classroom for all their students and families, and to help children who struggle with anxiety.
