Sonya specializes in working with all populations. Her experience up to this point has been broad. She has worked with students K-12 teaching mindfulness and mindful movement in classroom settings, as well as with parents, and their children. She has delivered professional development to staff of her school and others. Sonya has hosted sessions for organizations in retreat settings, and works with elders in extensive care. She is available for one on one sessions, as well as for group sessions. She has worked with students on the spectrum in the classroom setting. As part of her specialty, she also offers mindful movement to all populations.
Mindfulness is at the heart of Sonya’s life. She began her journey with mindfulness over 20 years ago teaching mindful movement to adults and children.
Sonya has been an educator, teaching K-12 for the past 25 years. In the past 5 years she was extremely excited to learn that mindfulness was being integrated into education in British Columbia Canada, through a program called MindUp, as part of supporting social emotional wellness and healthy habits of the mind in children.
In 25 years of teaching, and working with youth, Sonya came to understand how important social emotional well being is for learning and social flourishing.
Noticing her own continued passion for the practice of mindfulness, she chose to commit herself to expand her personal practice, knowledge and skills, now bringing it into the lives of others through embodied teaching.
Mindful Schools came into her life after attending a conference which opened her mind to the science and research behind the practice.
Through Mindful Schools Sonya has learned valuable skills to help youth/adults to increase their attention and emotional regulation, as well as deepening her own personal practice and understanding of the science behind it.
Sonya’s intent is to continue this mindful journey and along the way spread the seeds of mindfulness where ever possible. Tending to the heart and body and being connected in the present moment offers us a different way of being. Helping others to reduce anxiety and meet stress in a healthier way fills Sonya’s heart with joy.
She is very grateful to all the teachers of Mindful Schools, and for the ongoing support of this most amazing community of people.
