In her more than 30 years as a classroom teacher, Betsy Hanger has fostered creative collaboration between teachers and students. While completing a Master’s in Education with a focus on curriculum development (Concordia University Irvine, 2012), Betsy explored the research on the health and educational benefits of mindfulness practices, and completed her first cycle of the Mindful Schools curriculum. Since then, Betsy has taught mindfulness to dozens of classroom groups in the Los Angeles Unified School District. She has presented workshops to GATE parents, independent school divisions, and early childhood specialists, and developed ongoing classes in mindfulness with parents, teachers, and social workers. Her chapter on working skillfully with diverse youth will be included in Mindfulness with Youth: from the Classroom to the Clinic (New Harbinger Press, 2015). Her Master’s thesis, “Mindfulness Curriculum in Elementary Schools: an intervention for influencing emotional intelligence, executive function, and conflict resolution skills,” compared classroom-based mindfulness curricula for children and youth.
